Welcome to the first instalment of my blog series documenting an exciting personal project: innovating the use of 3D multimedia and Augmented Reality (AR) for the tourism industry. Our journey begins in the heart of Ireland, in the historic town of Athlone.
Why Athlone?
Nestled on the banks of the River Shannon, Athlone is more than just a town steeped in history and charm – it’s my hometown, the place where I grew up. With its 12th-century castle, ancient monasteries, and vibrant cultural scene, Athlone is a hidden gem in Ireland’s midlands that I’ve known all my life, yet am only now (in adulthood) truly beginning to appreciate.
I’ll admit, growing up here, I didn’t give much thought to the rich history surrounding me. The castle was just a familiar silhouette on the skyline, and the old churches were simply part of the backdrop of daily life. But as an adult, my perspective has shifted. This project isn’t only about innovation in tourism multimedia; it’s a personal journey of rediscovery.
As I delve into the 3D modelling of Athlone’s landmarks, I’m learning more about my hometown than I ever knew as a child. Each model I aim to create is an opportunity to uncover fascinating historical details and gain a deeper appreciation for the heritage that has always been right on my doorstep.
This combination of personal connection, newfound historical interest, and my passion for technology makes Athlone the perfect subject for exploring how cutting-edge tech can breathe new life into age-old stories. It’s not just about showcasing Athlone to the world; it’s about seeing my hometown through new eyes and sharing that renewed sense of wonder with others.
